The wheelchair team traveled to Birmingham, Alabama for our post-season semi-final, sectionals tournament over March 16 – 18. Our league, the United States Quad Rugby Association has 50 teams, split into 4 sections. Each section holds a post-season semi-final tournament (sectional). The top 4 teams from each section advance to the national championship tournament.
Detroit was off to a rough start. We did not have our full roster present, and the rest of us were off our game. Day one ended 0-2 with losses against St. Louis and Ohio. Day 2 wasn’t any better, another 0-2 day, losing to Chicago and Grand Rapids. We have successfully defeated all 4 of these teams in the past. Needless to say, we were frustrated.
Day 2 was St. Patrick’s day and we were 0-4 at the end of it. We were in search of a party. We found an outdoor concert behind a brewery on a 65 degree evening, exactly what we were craving. It turned out to be the sort of party where you lose a shoe (who needs shoes when you’re pushing a wheelchair anyways). As it also turns out, apparently this was exactly what we needed….
Day 3 started with an 8:00 am rematch against St. Louis. Despite the festivities from the evening prior, Detroit came out strong. We had the lead by the end of the first quarter and never let up, earning us our 1st win of tournament. The second game was against Cumberland, TN, resulting in another win for Detroit.
Detroit did not finish in the top 4, so this is where our season ends. We’re coming home with some beat up rugby chairs, bloodied and bruised forearms, and a half of a pair of shoes. Despite the 2-4 finish and not advancing to the national championship tournament, we finished this tournament in spectacular fashion and had a blast doing it.
Time for some rest and recovery, we’ll soon start preparations for the ‘18/’19 season.
