Detroit Wheelchair Invitational Recap and Standings

Wheelchair rugby has been in Michigan for more than 20 years, but before the Wheelchair Team of the Detroit Rugby Football Club, never in Detroit.  The first DRFC Wheelchair Rugby Tournament took place over the weekend of February 17-18, at Thurston High School and included 6 teams – Detroit, Grand Rapids, Chicago, London Ontario, Kansas City and University of Arizona.  Exactly 4 weeks prior to post season sectionals tournaments, the Detroit tournament was sure to be ripe with intense competition.

Despite rivalries and competition of the game, in true DRFC tradition, the Detroit Wheelchair Team were hosts to a social with the visiting teams at the DRFC club house after day 1.  We ate, we drank, we talked rugby – no better way to end the first day of the tournament.

This tournament was a great success with excellent representation from the DRFC.  We were able to show our visiting teams that with the help from the DRFC, wheelchair rugby is alive and well in Detroit.

Huge thanks to all of the volunteers and sponsors of the wheelchair team – The Recovery Project, Fusion Medical and Strength Training and Recovery Corp (STAR).
